A recent study published in the journal SPINE presents strong evidence that patients with neck pain should first receive chiropractic care. This study, which focused on Medicare patients, revealed that those who consulted a chiropractor for initial treatment experienced a significant 64% decrease in the need for advanced medical interventions compared to those who opted for traditional primary care.
The research team evaluated three treatment options: chiropractic adjustments, primary care without prescription medications, and primary care with pain-relieving drugs. While the findings are particularly relevant for individuals over 65, they are also significant for anyone suffering from neck pain.
The results were impressive: patients who received chiropractic care had a remarkable 77.8% decrease in hospitalizations and a staggering 93.3% decline in surgical procedures! This is not only about improving patient outcomes; it's also about reducing healthcare costs, especially since the expenses associated with neck pain treatment have surged six times faster than the condition itself.
A concerning trend emerged: patients who began their treatment with pain medications had an 8% higher rate of escalating care compared to those who did not use medications. The takeaway is clear—masking pain can lead to greater problems.
For doctors and surgeons aiming to enhance patient care, these results highlight an important opportunity: refer patients to a chiropractor. Engaging a chiropractor for initial neck pain management can lead to lower opioid use and fewer unnecessary surgeries. If patients do not improve, experienced chiropractors are equipped to direct them to the right healthcare providers for further assistance.
By adopting a "chiropractic-first" strategy for suitable neck pain patients, healthcare providers can potentially minimize the risks associated with medication dependence and invasive treatments, reducing the chances of developing chronic pain.
