Facts About Pelvic Pain During Pregnancy:

About 60 % of pregnant females experience low back and/or pelvic pain during their pregnancies.

Structural pain during pregnancy especially LBP and pelvic pain is usually from mechanical/postural factors but can also be caused by hormonal or circulatory changes in the body.

Chiropractic evaluation and light adjustment can significantly lessen the mechanical stress on the pregnant woman’s lumbar spine and pelvis. Chiropractors are specially trained to evaluate and adjust the spine during each trimester of pregnancy.

Many women are thrilled with easier labor and deliveries when receiving chiropractic care during the third trimester. The reason is that the adjustment of the spine and pelvis relieves pressure on the nerves that guide the growth and processes of the body (pregnant or not) and can even affect circulation.

Muhlemann and Muhlemann found that pregnancy-related low back pain (PLBP) and pelvic girdle pain (PGP) respond well to chiropractic interventions (Praxis, Germany, 2015).

Frequently Asked Questions...

  • Is it normal for pelvis to hurt during pregnancy?

Many women feel achy or constant pain, burning or tingling pain, or even sharp pain in their LB and pelvis during pregnancy.  Most of the time it is normal and is related to the changes that happen to your joints and nerves as the body prepares for the latter stages of pregnancy and labor and delivery.  (always check with your midwife or doctor to rule out any possible serious issues if the pain gets significant)

(click here for a great summary article by “Parents” magazine on what to look out for when you have pain during pregnancy)

Hormonal releases, changes in center of gravity, abnormal use/position of supporting joints can add up to irritated nerves, muscles, ligaments, and facia.

Chiropractic care and massage therapy are great drug-free ways to lessen the above listed pain.  Cromwell Family Chiropractic in Farmington, MI has 4 doctors and 4 massage therapists ready to help you with gentle functional improvement and pain relief.

  • How do you relieve pelvic pressure?

Some things to try when you have low to moderate low back/pelvic discomfort during pregnancy.

    • Wear low-heeled shoes with good arch support.

    • Lay sideways next to a body pillow and place your upper leg and upper arm on top of the pillow.  While in that position try repositioning your pelvis and/or lower leg slightly to find the least irritating posture.  Keep checking for a better position until pain lessens or you fall asleep (note you may need a soft blanket directly beneath your tummy for support if you are further into your pregnancy)

    • Take a “less than hot” bath or kneel in the shower… and let the water gently massage your back.  (Too hot can cause you and the baby physiological stress.)

    • Get a pregnancy (pre-natal) massage.

    • Try a pelvic support garment or support brace. A proper fitting support device will distribute the weight of the baby so there is less downward stress on your low back and pelvis.

    • Try to avoid quick movements and sharp turns at the waist, and all lifting of ten or more pounds.  If you have young children/toddlers have them crawl into your lap instead of lifting them into your lap.

    • Exercise lightly daily to prevent pain in the first place.

    • Get adjusted at your chiropractor’s clinic…yes, you can get adjusted without x-rays

    • Pace yourself every day.  Include periods of rest when possible…remember your body is using up energy and resources to make a new person.  You cannot be at the same level of daily living productivity that you were before you became pregnant.

  • How should you sleep with pelvic pain?

    • Place a pillow between your knees and ankles as you lay on your side.  This allows for normal spacing of the legs, feet, and pelvis so there is less tugging on the pelvic ligaments.
    • Try a different mattress/box springs in the house.  Each bed supports you differently so you may find one that works for you.
    • Use mild/moist heat or cold on the sore part of your back. (the blue gel packs are easy in the microwave…do not use electric heating pad nor electric blanket)
    • Get adjusted at your chiropractor to make sleeping easier and less painful.
    • Get a professional massage from a licensed therapist, let them know you are pregnant.
