How Does Our Body Work

What do you think tells your eyelids to blink at the proper time? Or your lungs to breathe the correct number of times each minute? What tells your legs to hold you “upright” at this moment? What controls the operation of your kidneys, spleen, liver, blood flow, etc.?

The answer is your NERVOUS SYSTEM
The nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
See the chart below to see how your nervous system affects your body.

THE BRAIN: The brain is a very special 3-pound lump of tissue that controls everything in your body. It does so using only as much electricity as a 10-watt light bulb. If a computer were built today, with the same capacity as the brain for functions and storage, it would require the physical space of two 100-story skyscrapers! Yet the brain requires no maintenance and can run for 80 plus years. What a deal – the greatest mechanism in this world today and you own it!

THE SPINAL CORD AND SPINAL NERVES: These are the communication lines of your body. Messages from the brain travel down the spinal cord and along the spinal nerves and go to every part of the body. It is much like millions of bits of information traveling through fiber optic wires (at the speed of light), coordinating everything together. Together your brain and spinal cord are able to take feedback from the body and make thousands of decisions within a split second and then send signals to control the body’s complex reactions as you go about your day.

So the next time you enjoy a delicious meal, or take a quick step to avoid a rain puddle, or listen to Mozart, or when your lungs breath the correct number of times, etc., try and imagine the wonderful system that guides all the activities and functions of your entire body.
